The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has arrested 210 beggars comprising 80 men, 58 women, and 72 children during the first four days of Operation Sweep Abuja, aimed at clearing the city of street beggars, scavengers, illegal traders, and criminals.
Acting Director of Social Welfare, Gloria Onwuka, said the beggars are being held at the Bwari Rehabilitation Centre and will be returned to their home states. Some were found using children—often not their own to beg, while others faked injuries or illnesses.
FCTA’s Director of Security Services, Damy Gwary, said the operation has covered Wuse, Garki, Kubwa, and other major areas, and will continue until security threats are fully addressed.
