Casual workers at the FCT Water Board are pleading with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to step in and address their plight after going unpaid for six months.
Many of them, including HND holders, earn between N20,000 and N25,000 monthly and are assigned to distribute bills and carry out minor repairs across various area offices. But since December 2024, they haven’t received a dime.
There are two groups of casual staff at the board — those paid directly by the FCTA, who are reportedly being paid regularly, and those under the Water Board’s payroll, who have been left hanging.
A senior official at the board, who spoke anonymously, blamed the delay on the lack of overhead funding from the FCTA.
The affected workers say they’ve repeatedly appealed to the authorities for regular employment and for their unpaid stipends to be cleared, but nothing has changed.
“My two kids are out of school. Life is really tough,” said Chioma, a casual worker with an HND.
Another worker, Mrs. Yahaya Hanafi, also called on Minister Wike to urgently intervene and bring them some relief.
