FCT Workers Barricade HQ, Demand Wike’s Removal over Poor Welfare

Tensions flared in Abuja as staff of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) barricaded the commission’s headquarters, protesting unpaid salaries, delayed promotions, and poor working conditions. The aggrieved workers are also demanding the removal of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of worsening their welfare.

“This FCT Civil Service Commission we’re talking about we fought for it with our blood,” said the JUAC Chairman. “Now it’s the Minister benefiting from it more than the workers.”

The protest was led by various unions, including the Nigeria Civil Service Union and the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC). Former JUAC Secretary-General voiced the collective anger:
“Yes, we pray our demands aren’t met—so we can teach him a lesson. He will never cross this barricade.”

Union leaders say FCTA workers deserve dignity and recognition, not neglect.

Workers lamented years of neglect. Tabitha Agila, representing auxiliary staff at the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), said some employees haven’t been paid in six months, despite decades of service. Others reportedly earn as little as ₦35,000 with no appointment letters.

“We thought Wike would change things for the better,” said the Chair of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, FCT Chapter. “But he’s proven to be a disaster.”
