The Federal Government has grounded a Rano Air aircraft following an engine failure that occurred mid-flight on the Abuja-Katsina route on Sunday, June 30, 2025.
The aircraft, identified by registration number 5N-BZY, encountered engine trouble shortly after takeoff. Smoke reportedly filled the cabin and cockpit, prompting the flight crew to initiate emergency procedures and return to base. All passengers and crew landed safely with no injuries reported.
In response to the incident, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) ordered the immediate grounding of the aircraft to allow for a comprehensive safety inspection and investigation.
According to the NCAA, the decision reflects the agency’s strict adherence to safety regulations and its zero-tolerance approach to potential mechanical faults.
A rescue flight scheduled to pick up passengers from Sokoto was also cancelled as a result of the incident. The NCAA assured the public that the situation is under control and that further updates will follow upon completion of the investigation.
