The Federal Ministry of Education has called for calm and dialogue over the ongoing dispute about the implementation of the new national minimum wage for primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This comes after the FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) issued a communiqué following an emergency meeting held in Gwagwalada on March 22, 2025.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, acknowledged the concerns raised by the union and assured them that the federal government values the important role teachers play in building the nation.

He explained that primary schools in the FCT are managed by the six Area Councils, but emphasized that the government is committed to supporting teachers across the country.

Dr. Alausa said he is working together with the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and other stakeholders to help resolve the issue peacefully.

He urged the Area Council chairmen to work closely with the teachers’ union to find a fair solution.

The Ministry also warned that the success of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda depends on fairness and cooperation. It called on all parties to avoid any action that could disrupt learning in schools.
