A farmer, Baba Yakubu, was gruesomely killed on Thursday by suspected herdsmen at Mai Kwari village in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following a confrontation over the destruction of his cassava farm.
According to a relative, Danjuma Ishaku, the incident began when herders reportedly allowed their cattle to graze on Yakubu’s cassava field. In protest, Yakubu struck one of the cows with a cutlass.
This led to a violent retaliation, with one of the herders allegedly stabbing Yakubu. His son, who was with him at the time, managed to escape and raised an alarm.
Yakubu was rushed to Kwaita Clinic, where he was confirmed dead. His body has since been buried.
The incident has been reported to security operatives in the area, though the FCT Police Command is yet to release an official statement. As of the time of filing this report, police spokesperson SP Adeh Josephine had not responded to inquiries.
The killing has sparked anger in the community, reigniting concerns over the recurring clashes between farmers and herders in rural parts of the FCT.
