President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday, June 28, 2025, departed Abuja for a two-nation diplomatic tour to Saint Lucia and Brazil. The trip, according to the presidency, is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s bilateral ties and expanding South–South cooperation.
In Saint Lucia, Tinubu is scheduled to undertake a state visit where he will meet with top government officials, including the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Charles, and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre. He will also address a special joint session of the Saint Lucian Parliament and engage in talks with leaders of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
Part of the President’s itinerary includes a visit to the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, named after the Nobel Laureate, to promote educational and cultural collaboration between Nigeria and the Caribbean region.
Following his engagements in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu will proceed to Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS Summit taking place in Rio de Janeiro from July 6 to 7, 2025. The summit, which brings together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, will focus on the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”
Although Nigeria is not a BRICS member, President Tinubu was invited as a special guest by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Nigeria is participating as a partner country in recognition of its growing role in global economic and diplomatic affairs.
The President is accompanied on the trip by top government officials and presidential aides. The visit is expected to enhance Nigeria’s diplomatic profile and unlock new opportunities for international partnerships.
