The FCT Women Affairs Secretariat has called for more involvement of girls in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) space, saying both boys and girls deserve equal chances to succeed in the digital world.
Dr. Hauwa Aminu Wambai, Head of the Adolescent Girls Department, made the statement during the 2025 Debate and Quiz Competition organised by Plan International in Abuja. The theme of the event was “Girls in ICT.”
Dr. Wambai said ICT is often seen as a male-dominated field, but girls also use and benefit from digital tools and should be encouraged to take part.
“We’re happy to see more girls joining the ICT world. Innovation has no gender,” she said. “We thank Plan International for working with us to support and empower girls in the FCT.”
She urged the students to speak confidently and reminded them that the competition was more about learning and growth than just winning.
“Don’t feel bad if you don’t win. It’s all part of the learning process,” she encouraged.
The event featured students from schools across the FCT, including:
- Wisdom International School, Sauka
- Government Secondary School, Nyanya
- Noble Hall Leadership Academy for Girls
- Light of Day School, Kubwa
- Government Day Secondary School, Karu
The goal of the competition was to help students think critically, build confidence, and discuss how technology can help solve real-life problems.
The Women Affairs Secretariat promised to continue supporting programs that give girls the skills and confidence to thrive in the tech world.
