Abuja Court Threatens to Dismiss Treason Case Against Protesters

The Federal High Court in Abuja has warned it may strike out the treason charges filed against 11 youths over their alleged involvement in the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protest, citing persistent delays in prosecution.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the warning on Tuesday after the trial stalled again due to a request for adjournment by a new prosecutor, Ibrahim Muhammed, who had just taken over the case.

Defence lawyers, led by Deji Adeyanju and Abubakar Marshal, opposed the delay, urging the court to dismiss the charges for lack of diligent prosecution. They argued that the prolonged trial has financially strained the defendants and described the charges as vague.

Justice Nwite acknowledged the repeated adjournments and warned the prosecution to proceed at the next hearing or risk having the case struck out. The trial resumes on August 9, 2025.
