Abuja, Nigeria – June 25, 2025
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, demanding the immediate reopening of government-owned schools shut down due to the ongoing strike by teachers.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NANS expressed deep concern over the prolonged closure of schools within the FCT, noting that students have been the most affected by the impasse between the FCT Administration and the striking teachers under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
According to the NANS Senate President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, the association can no longer watch silently as the future of students is jeopardized. He called on the FCTA to immediately engage the aggrieved teachers and resolve all outstanding issues, including unpaid salaries and welfare concerns.
“We are giving the Minister seven days to take decisive steps towards reopening all public schools in Abuja. Failure to do so will leave us with no option but to mobilize students across the country for a massive protest within the city,” Babatunde warned.
He accused the FCT Administration of showing little political will to end the strike, which has kept thousands of students out of classrooms for several weeks.
The Abuja chapter of the NUT had embarked on an indefinite strike in response to unpaid entitlements and poor working conditions, crippling academic activities across government schools.
As the ultimatum begins, concerned parents, teachers, and stakeholders have urged the FCTA to act swiftly to prevent further disruption of the academic calendar.
