A former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Chief Peter Ameh, has criticised the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) over its decision to construct an annex headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

The FCDA recently announced plans to commence the project, aimed at expanding INEC’s operational capacity within the FCT. However, Ameh expressed strong reservations, calling it a misplaced priority in the face of pressing national needs.

According to him, Nigeria is grappling with urgent challenges such as rising insecurity, inflation, and dilapidated infrastructure all of which require immediate attention and funding.

“This is not the time to divert public resources to erect another building for INEC. What Nigerians need is a more credible electoral process, not more structures,” he said.

He urged the FCDA to redirect its focus toward improving roads, healthcare, and education in underserved communities within the capital territory.

Meanwhile, FCDA officials defended the move, saying the project is part of a long-term urban development plan designed to support the expansion of key federal institutions.

Construction is expected to commence in phases, with no confirmed budget released as of the time of filing this report.
