Nigeria Police Recover Stolen Vehicles from Ghana and Niger, Arrest Three Suspects
In a significant transnational operation, the Nigeria Police Force recovered several vehicles stolen from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), traced as far as Ghana and Niger Republic. Three suspects linked to the thefts have been arrested.
According to police spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the operation was led by INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, in partnership with authorities in Ghana and Niger. The effort followed intelligence tracking of vehicles smuggled out of Nigeria.
One recovered vehicle, a 2020 Toyota Prado owned by a federal agency, was found in Accra, Ghana. The three suspects arrested in connection with this theft have been charged in a Ghanaian court, and the SUV has been returned to Nigeria. Another vehicle, another vehicle, a 2018 Toyota Hilux, stolen from Utako District, Abuja, in October 2024, was retrieved in Agadez, Niger Republic, and handed over to Nigerian officials at the Nigeria-Niger border.
The police are working to recover additional stolen vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser and another Prado SUV believed to have been sold in Niamey, Niger Republic.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun commended the collaboration between Nigerian security forces and international partners, emphasizing the commitment to fighting cross-border crime and boosting public trust. The police urged vehicle owners to register their cars on authorized electronic tracking platforms to enhance recovery chances if stolen.
