The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has initiated new efforts to safeguard senior citizens in the FCT from abuse, neglect, and other forms of mistreatment.

The initiative, launched through the Social Development Secretariat, aims to promote dignity, protection, and inclusive welfare for the ageing population across Abuja.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, the Mandate Secretary of the Social Development Secretariat, Mrs. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, said the administration is developing policies that prioritize the rights and well-being of the elderly.

She noted that the FCTA is working closely with healthcare providers, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and families to create an environment where older citizens feel safe, respected, and supported.

“Elder abuse is often silent and hidden. We are taking a proactive stance to ensure our senior citizens are not forgotten or mistreated,” she said.

The new framework includes awareness campaigns, improved access to social and healthcare services, and potential legal protections to address reported cases of abuse or abandonment.

FCTA officials emphasized that the initiative aligns with global best practices on elderly care and reflects the administration’s broader commitment to inclusive social development.
