Abuja, Nigeria

In a decisive step toward consumer protection, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has inaugurated a Joint Market Monitoring Taskforce (JMMT) with the authority to shut down shops, warehouses, and outlets found selling unsafe or substandard products within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The flag-off ceremony for the taskforce’s first phase took place on Wednesday at the FCCPC headquarters in Abuja and was witnessed by Nairametrics and other stakeholders.

Comprising FCCPC officials and market representatives, the JMMT is expected to conduct regular inspections and enforce compliance in key commercial hubs across the city. The participating markets include Wuse Market, Utako Market, Garki International Market, and Garki Modern Market.

According to the FCCPC, the taskforce is empowered to take swift action including sealing business premises where harmful or substandard goods are discovered, with the aim of protecting consumers and sanitizing the market environment.

This move aligns with the Commission’s broader mandate to uphold consumer rights and ensure that goods sold across Nigeria meet approved safety and quality standards.
