The Federal Government has commenced an investigation into the Emergency Unit of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, following serious allegations of medical negligence.
The probe was ordered after a formal complaint was submitted by a patient, Mr. Ogboli Charles, who accused a medical practitioner at the centre, Dr. Joseph Eziechila, of negligence that allegedly left him visually impaired and physically disabled. The complaint also includes a demand for ₦500 million in compensation for damages.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adeleke Mamora, directed the Management Board of FMC Abuja to thoroughly investigate the claims. In response, the hospital’s board constituted an independent panel led by Dr. Femi Babalola, with Dr. Fatima Kyari and Dr. Rosemary Uzowulu as members.
The panel has begun reviewing the case, collecting testimonies, and assessing medical records to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
The Federal Ministry of Health emphasized that the investigation is part of its broader commitment to improving service delivery and ensuring accountability in the healthcare sector.
The outcome of the probe is expected to guide further action, including possible sanctions or reforms, depending on the findings.
