Vice President Kashim Shettima has opened Africa’s most advanced medical facility in Abuja to keep patients from traveling abroad for treatment.

The African Medical Centre of Excellence launched Thursday with 500 beds and cutting edge technology. Afreximbank partnered with London’s King’s College Hospital to build the facility.

The hospital specializes in cancer treatment, heart surgery, blood disorders, and general surgery. It will also train doctors and conduct medical research.

The centre features West Africa’s first 18 MeV Cyclotron and Africa’s largest stem cell laboratory. Advanced equipment includes 3 Tesla MRI machines, PET scanners, and AI-powered diagnosis tools.

These technologies can handle complex procedures like stem cell transplants and clinical trials that were previously unavailable in Africa.

Shettima, representing President Tinubu, said the project proves Africa can compete with the world’s best hospitals.

“This demonstrates that Africa can deliver world-class healthcare,” he stated at the opening ceremony.

AMCE CEO Brian Deaver said Africans no longer need expensive trips overseas for advanced medical care. He called the facility a blend of “engineering excellence and compassionate care.”

Afreximbank President Benedict Oramah announced plans for similar medical centres across Africa to end the continent’s reliance on foreign healthcare.

The hospital will treat over 350,000 patients in its first five years and create 3,000 jobs. It will also operate a medical school to train future African healthcare workers.

The project supports the federal government’s health reforms and infrastructure development aimed at improving medical services nationwide.
