Electricity workers in Abuja and nearby states may shut down power supply over unresolved payment disputes.
Staff at Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) are preparing for an indefinite strike. Two major unions have accused the company of breaking promises made in November 2024.
The National Union of Electricity Employees and Senior Staff Association sent separate complaint letters to AEDC management. They listed several unresolved issues affecting workers.
Union members say AEDC has failed to pay:
- Pension contributions
- Performance bonuses
- Staff promotion arrears
- Proper welfare benefits
The unions pointed out that AEDC earned ₦94 billion in three months but still refuses to pay workers what they owe.
Workers are mobilizing across FCT, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger States. The unions warn the strike could start at any time.
A power shutdown would affect millions of people in Nigeria’s capital and surrounding areas. Businesses, hospitals, schools, and other essential services would face serious disruption.
The unions are demanding immediate action from AEDC management to avoid the industrial action.
