Abuja Residents to Face Two-Week Water Disruption Over Dam Maintenance

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Water Board has announced a two-week water supply disruption in Abuja, starting Friday, May 30, to Friday, June 13, 2025. The interruption is due to ongoing rehabilitation at the Lower Usuma Dam Water Treatment Plant.

The Board explained that the shutdown will allow for the installation of critical electro-mechanical equipment, a major part of the upgrade. “We appeal to residents to store enough water and make alternative arrangements,” the public notice read.

Acknowledging the likely inconvenience, the Water Board expressed regret and urged understanding. The Lower Usuma Dam is Abuja’s main water source, serving millions of residents, and the outage is expected to affect households, businesses, and institutions.

Water expert Amina Bello noted that while the disruption may be difficult, the upgrade is essential for long-term improvements. “This maintenance is overdue and will enhance supply reliability,” she said.

Some residents, like Gwarimpa’s Ibrahim Musa, expressed concern but recognized the importance of the project. “It’s not easy, but if it leads to better service, we’ll manage,” he said.
