An official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been found dead in his Abuja residence, in what sources suspect to be a suicide, according to a report by PRNigeria.

The deceased officer, a member of Course 5 from the EFCC academy, was widely regarded as a diligent and efficient figure within the anti-corruption body. Despite his reputation for excellence, it is believed he had been privately grappling with depression and other personal struggles before his tragic passing.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the development, noting that the agency is already initiating a detailed probe into the circumstances surrounding the death. He also assured that the Commission is extending full support to the bereaved family during this period of mourning.

“We will be investigating various elements, including mental health concerns and possible personal issues, as part of our internal review,” Oyewale stated. He added that the identity of the deceased would remain confidential until the conclusion of the investigation and official communication with the family is completed.

The unfortunate event has reignited conversations about the psychological toll of law enforcement work, with growing calls for improved mental health support systems within agencies like the EFCC.

“Our focus is on uncovering what truly happened and ensuring preventive measures are put in place to avoid a recurrence,” Oyewale added.
