The FCT Administration, in partnership with We Care Solar, has launched the Light Every Birth initiative to provide solar power to maternity wards and health centres across Abuja.
The project was unveiled on May 27, 2025, at Kuje General Hospital during Children’s Day celebrations. HSES Permanent Secretary, Dr. Baba Gana Adam, said the initiative supports safe childbirth and reliable healthcare powered by clean energy.
Over 200 solar suitcases have already been installed in primary and secondary facilities, with plans to reach all public health centres. The program also trains women as solar installers, promoting both healthcare and empowerment.
Dr. Ambrose Muhwezi of We Care Solar said the initiative aims to reduce maternal and newborn deaths caused by poor electricity in health facilities.
Officials, health workers, and community leaders praised the impact and pledged support for expanding the program.
