The House of Representatives has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, to declare a state of emergency in the health sector of Abuja, following growing concerns over the worsening state of public healthcare facilities in the capital.

This resolution came after a motion presented by Rep. Nnamdi Ezechi (PDP–Delta) was adopted during plenary. Lawmakers expressed alarm at the declining quality of healthcare services, citing inadequate infrastructure, insufficient medical staff, and overstretched hospitals.

The House demanded the immediate disbursement of emergency funds to improve existing medical facilities, hire more healthcare professionals, and procure essential equipment.

Ezechi, in his presentation, noted that the healthcare system in the FCT is under serious pressure. “Government hospitals are overwhelmed and understaffed, leading to a shortage of bed spaces and medical workers,” he said.

He further pointed out that the FCT’s population has grown dramatically over the last 20 years, but most public hospitals have not been upgraded to meet the growing demand for services.

Lawmakers warned that unless swift action is taken, the situation could escalate into a major public health crisis in the nation’s capital.
