Some government officials in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have been accused of helping illegal buildings take over green areas in Abuja. These green areas are meant to be protected spaces for nature, parks, and public use. But many of them are now being turned into private properties, especially for houses and businesses.

Illegal Buildings Found in Green Zones

Recently, the FCTA discovered over 10 duplexes built illegally in Wumba District, near Apo. These buildings were constructed without approval or documents, even after the government gave warnings and placed stop-work signs. In some cases, the developers even removed or hid the notices.

The FCTA has now ordered that the buildings be demolished.

Officials May Be Involved

Investigations show that some FCTA staff may be helping developers build in these areas, either by giving false approvals or by ignoring the illegal work. It was reported that a former official who tried to stop the land misuse was suspended. Also, many top positions in the FCTA have been changing frequently, raising questions about whether this is being done to hide wrongdoing.

Foreign Company Also Involved

In another case, a Chinese company was caught building a box culvert on a green area in Utako without permission. They tried to claim the land for their own use. The FCTA says it will take legal action against those responsible.

FCTA Reacts Strongly

The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has said the government will not allow green areas to be taken over. The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) also warned that any FCTA staff caught supporting illegal development will be punished.

The government is also removing illegal structures from floodplains and water channels to stop future flooding. In Guzape, a developer was found to have built 42 houses instead of the 18 that were approved. Those buildings will also be demolished.

Protecting Abuja’s Environment

The FCTA says it is serious about protecting green areas and following the city’s master plan. Officials say those who break the law whether developers or government workers will face justice.

The hope is that these actions will help bring back the natural beauty of Abuja and stop illegal land grabbing.
