The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued 19 girls who were allegedly impregnated by a single man in Abuja.
The shocking discovery was made in an estate within the city and was confirmed by NAPTIP Director-General, Binta Bello, during a recent meeting with the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Speaking at the strategic session, Dabiri-Erewa described the situation as a national emergency and called for urgent action. She urged the government to publicly name and shame human traffickers and impose stricter penalties to discourage such inhumane acts.
“This is heartbreaking. It is time we adopt tougher measures and work together across all sectors to end trafficking,” she said.
Bello noted that the agency remains committed to protecting vulnerable persons and ensuring justice for victims of trafficking. She also highlighted recent successful rescue efforts, including the return of 231 Nigerians trafficked to Ghana.
Both officials stressed the need for greater public awareness, community involvement, and support for law enforcement agencies in tackling human trafficking and gender-based abuse.
As investigations continue, the public is watching closely, hopeful that the victims will get justice and the perpetrators will be held accountable.
