The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to build new bus terminals in Bwari and Gwagwalada Area Councils to improve transportation and enhance commuter safety in Abuja.

Wike made this known on Saturday, May 17, 2025, during an inspection of several ongoing projects, including the major renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC) and the upgrade of key roads in Bwari Area Council specifically the Ushafa, War College, and Army Checkpoint roads.

Speaking with reporters after the tour, the Minister explained that the planned bus terminals will serve as safe departure and arrival points for commuters traveling between satellite towns and central Abuja.

“We’ve agreed to set up one bus terminal in Gwagwalada and another in Bwari,” Wike said. “This will help people travel safely from these areas to places like Mabushi, Kugbo, and the Central Business District. These terminals are designed to fight the ‘one chance’ crime and provide more secure transportation options.”

He added that the initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which aims to reduce infrastructure gaps and bring development to all parts of the FCT—not just the city centre.

Wike pointed to ongoing infrastructure work, including a 12-kilometer road network in Ushafa and the dualization of the Kuje-Gwagwalada road, as examples of the government’s focus on satellite towns.

“The President is committed to developing rural communities. When people have good roads, transport, and other basic services where they live, they won’t feel the need to relocate to the city,” he said.

The Minister also highlighted the significance of the ongoing upgrade of the International Conference Centre, saying it aligns with the President’s goal of offering Nigerians world-class public infrastructure.

According to Wike, these improvements will reduce travel times, encourage more people to live in satellite towns, and help ease congestion in central Abuja.

“It’s all about balance. We want people to have quality living conditions no matter where they are in the FCT,” he added.
