A desperate search is underway in Abuja as rescue teams battle time and turbulent waters to find 13-year-old Great Duru, who was swept away in the powerful current of the Apa River near Urumi Village, close to the Idu Railway Junction.

The tragedy struck last Thursday when Great and his two siblings, joined by a friend, went to the river to play. When one of his sisters slipped into the water, the teenager leapt in to save her.

Though she made it out alive, Great never resurfaced.

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at 3:45 PM via its 112 emergency line.

Its rescue unit, now working in close collaboration with local divers and residents, has since intensified the search operation.

FEMD also visited community leaders of the Gbagyi and Igbo groups in Urumi Village, offering support and strengthening cooperation.

The Duru family, reportedly away from Abuja during the incident, has been contacted.

Acting Director General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, expressed deep concern and urged parents to be extra vigilant with their children around open water.

He assured that the search will not be called off until the boy is found and encouraged residents to report emergencies swiftly using the 112 hotline.

The mission continues, with hope still alive.
