In a bid to end the ongoing strike by Area Council employees, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has disbursed over ₦4.16 billion to the six Area Councils for the payment of the new minimum wage and its arrears.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, made the announcement during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration at Eagle Square, Abuja. Represented by the FCT Head of Civil Service, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, Wike confirmed that the sum of ₦4,166,194,061.25 had been released to the councils.

“I once again call on them to ensure the payment of the minimum wage and its arrears to the workers,” the minister stated.

Wike expressed concern over the industrial action and reaffirmed the FCTA’s commitment to staff welfare, saying, “A motivated workforce is the backbone of effective public service delivery.”

He also acknowledged the dedication and patriotism of workers across all levels, highlighting their crucial role in nation-building.

Since assuming office in 2023, Wike said the FCTA has implemented key reforms including prompt salary and pension payments, staff training, workspace upgrades, and support for career advancement.

Speaking on this year’s Workers’ Day theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” Wike emphasized the importance of preserving democratic participation and protecting workers’ rights amid economic challenges.

He also pledged to improve working conditions for teachers in the Area Councils by upgrading school facilities and supplying adequate learning materials.
