The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has announced a 40% reduction in fares for CNG-powered taxis at the Area One Motor Park in Abuja. This move aims to ease transport costs and create jobs following the removal of fuel subsidies.
Speaking at the park, PCNGI’s Regional Manager for the North, David Idakwo, said the initiative reflects a shift toward cleaner and cheaper transport options. “We have converted many of the taxis to CNG and agreed with the transport union to reduce fares accordingly. Today, we begin enforcement,” he stated.
In partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the initiative also includes a task force to monitor compliance. Converted taxis are marked with visible fare tags to help passengers identify them.
Under the new fare structure:
- Area One to Gwagwalada now costs ₦900 (down from ₦1,500)
- Bwari/Dutse fares have dropped to ₦900
- Kuje is now ₦720 (was ₦1,200)
- Galadimawa dropped from ₦500 to ₦300
- Mpape and Zuba now cost ₦600 and ₦900 respectively
Beyond fare cuts, the PCNGI has empowered over 2,000 Nigerian youths with training in vehicle conversion and maintenance, building a skilled workforce in clean energy transport.
The initiative, backed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, is part of broader efforts to provide long-term relief and promote sustainable energy nationwide.
