Abuja Natives Demand Right to Elect Governor in 2027
Indigenous residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called on the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow them elect their own governor by the 2027 general elections.
The call was made during a town hall meeting in Abuja, where traditional leaders, youth groups, and community members expressed frustration over what they described as political marginalization.
“We are the only people in Nigeria without an elected governor or a fully autonomous local government system,” said Yunana Shigo, a youth representative from Kuje. “This is unfair, and we are demanding equal rights.”
The residents argued that being governed by appointed ministers does not give them true representation, unlike other parts of the country where leaders are chosen by the people.
They urged the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to grant the FCT the same political rights as Nigeria’s 36 states.
“We want to vote for our own governor in 2027. It’s time our voices count,” said another speaker.
So far, there has been no official response from the government or INEC.
