The Federal Government (FG) has officially clarified its plans for the much-anticipated agro-based development project, which aims to enhance Nigeria’s agricultural sector and stimulate rural economies across the country. In a recent statement, the government revealed that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be among the first beneficiaries of the initiative.
The project, which is part of the government’s broader strategy to achieve food security and economic diversification, will focus on promoting sustainable agricultural practices, improving local food production, and supporting the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the agro-sector.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the FCT was selected as a priority area for the initial phase of the program due to its strategic location, availability of arable land, and potential to serve as a model for other regions. The government plans to provide vital resources, including funding, equipment, and technical assistance, to local farmers and agribusinesses in the territory.
In addition to FCT, other states and regions with significant agricultural potential will also benefit from the initiative. However, the government emphasized that the focus will initially be on areas that are most likely to demonstrate the immediate impact of the project, helping to create jobs, enhance food security, and improve the livelihoods of rural communities.
The Minister of Agriculture, who made the announcement, stated that the project would also encourage the use of modern farming technologies and best practices, ensuring long-term sustainability and greater productivity across the agro-sector.
“This project is a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural value chains, and we are excited to see the FCT lead the way in this national effort,” the Minister added.
The Federal Government has called on all stakeholders in the agricultural sector, including state governments, private investors, and local farmers, to collaborate and fully leverage the opportunities presented by this initiative.
As the project progresses, the FG aims to expand the initiative across all regions, with a special focus on boosting rural infrastructure and creating opportunities for youth involvement in agriculture.
