Residents of Gwagwalada in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are expressing anger and disappointment after a newly completed multimillion-naira drainage project collapsed during its first test — the season’s first rainfall.

The drainage system, designed to reduce the risk of flooding, was built across key areas including Park Road, Aguma Palace, One Way, and the Abattoir district. But instead of offering relief, the project has now become a source of fear and frustration, as parts of the drainage have already crumbled.

A civic group, MonITNG, raised concerns over the project in a statement on April 11, describing the collapse as evidence of poor construction and misuse of public funds.

“The fact that this drainage could not withstand one rainfall shows the work was poorly done,” the group said. “It is clear that substandard materials were used, which has now put the lives of people in danger.”

MonITNG also called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to launch a full investigation and ensure that all contractors involved are held accountable.

Frustrated residents echoed the watchdog’s concerns. One resident said:

“We had high hopes for this project. Everyone believed it would finally solve our flooding problems. Now, we feel deceived and abandoned.”

As the rainy season approaches, both residents and civic groups are demanding that the government urgently revisit the project and ensure it is properly rebuilt to prevent future disaster.

They insist that the failure of the drainage system must not be ignored and are calling for action before more damage is done.
