A day-old baby has been abandoned in the Jikoko community, located in the Mpape area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The baby was found inside a carton, wrapped in cloth, and left along a bush path near a poultry farm in the community.

Speaking to our correspondent on Saturday, a resident identified as Aliyu shared the shock felt by locals:

“We woke up to the sight of a day-old baby kept in a carton. The carton was placed along a bush path close to a poultry farm in Jikoko. The police were notified, and they took the baby to a health centre for medical attention.”

When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident, adding that the police had started an investigation to trace the mother of the abandoned child.

“Investigation has commenced to locate the mother of the baby. The baby is currently with the social welfare department,” she said.

This isn’t the first time such a case has been reported in the Mpape area. In January 2025, another newborn was discovered along a bush path near Crush Rock, behind the uncompleted Red Bricks Market in Mpape.

The recurring cases have raised concerns about child abandonment in the area, sparking calls for stronger community awareness and better support systems for vulnerable mothers.
