Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have intercepted a shipment of tramadol valued at N8.6 billion at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The seizure was confirmed during a press briefing by the Customs Comptroller in charge of the airport command, who described the operation as a major success in the ongoing fight against illegal drug importation.
According to Customs, the tramadol was smuggled into the country through air cargo and was discovered during a routine inspection. The drugs were concealed in packages meant to evade security checks.
The Customs Service stressed that tramadol, which is often abused and classified as a controlled substance, poses serious risks to public health and security.
The agency commended the vigilance of its officers and warned importers to steer clear of illegal shipments, adding that investigations are ongoing to uncover those behind the smuggling attempt.
