FCT Medical, Dental Practitioners Elect New Leaders

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP), an affiliate of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has elected and inaugurated a new State Officers Council (SOC).

The new leadership emerged during the Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), Scientific Conference, and Elections held recently in Abuja.

Dr. Okoreffia Ogbonnaya was sworn in as the new State Chairman and, in his inaugural address, unveiled a bold and comprehensive agenda aimed at improving the welfare and professional development of government-employed general medical and dental practitioners in the FCT.

Among his key priorities are:

  • Establishment of a permanent secretariat for the Association
  • Advocacy for eligible members on Grade Levels 15 to 17 with postgraduate qualifications to occupy leadership roles in government hospitals
  • Collaboration with the national body to secure General Practitioner (GP) allowances similar to those earned by specialist consultants

Dr. Ogbonnaya also emphasized plans to:

  • Expand membership outreach
  • Promote access to civil service training opportunities
  • Provide support for members’ retirement planning, including guidance on pension funds, National Housing Schemes, and health insurance

He further pledged to introduce postgraduate training support for members pursuing advanced degrees such as Master’s, PhDs, and post-doctoral studies. To enhance leadership and administrative skills, the new chairman announced plans for specialized management training in collaboration with reputable institutions, including the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), the Centre for Management Development (CMD), and the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria (Chartered).

Other members elected into the State Officers Council (SOC) include:

  • Dr. Ekama Erhinyoja Peter (Federal Medical Centre, Institution and Research District) – Vice Chairman
  • Dr. Umar Alhaji Umar (Maitama District Hospital, FCTA) – Secretary
  • Dr. Ihegazie Dorothy (Abuja and Municipal Area Council, FCTA) – Assistant Secretary
  • Dr. Olaniyi Olatayo Jethro (Kuje General Hospital, FCTA) – Treasurer
  • Dr. Magode Dikko Stephen (Bwari Area Council, FCTA) – Publicity Secretary

The new leadership team is expected to usher in a new era of growth, inclusiveness, and strategic engagement for government general medical and dental practitioners across the FCT.
