Abuja Gets First Green Solar-Powered Market

Abuja, Nigeria – April 5, 2025

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has called for a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economy that supports local farmers, empowers small-scale agribusinesses, and ensures quality produce is accessible to all residents of the territory.

Dr. Mahmoud made this call during the official commissioning of the Utako Farmers Market—a first-of-its-kind, green, solar-powered, state-of-the-art agricultural hub—developed by the Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL).

Speaking at the event, the Minister described the market as a landmark project that serves as a hub for economic empowerment, agricultural excellence, and a crucial link between producers and consumers.

“This market will serve as a platform where farmers can sell directly to buyers, eliminating middlemen, reducing post-harvest losses, and boosting rural incomes,” she stated.

She urged farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs to take full ownership of the facility and leverage it as a catalyst for economic growth and community development.

While commending AICL’s visionary leadership and dedication, Dr. Mahmoud highlighted the project as a shining example of what is achievable through public-private partnerships, strategic investment, and community-driven development.

“As we inaugurate this market today, we reaffirm the commitment of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, under the leadership of Barrister Nyesom Wike, to deliver development that is people-centered, impactful, and sustainable,” she added.

She also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support of efforts aimed at transforming the nation’s capital.

A Model of Innovation and Sustainability

Earlier, Ambassador Maureen Tamuno, Group Managing Director/CEO of AICL, described the Utako Farmers Market as the first green, solar-powered market in the FCT and arguably the first in Nigeria.

She emphasized that the project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which focuses on building inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.

“With this Green Farmers Market, we’ve demonstrated our resolve to drive environmental sustainability and contribute meaningfully to the global effort against climate change,” Tamuno said.

The clean and reliable solar power supply, she noted, will allow traders to extend their business hours and better preserve perishable goods, thereby enhancing productivity and income generation.

Tamuno added that the project directly supports the food security objectives of the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the Tinubu administration.

Market Features

Developed on 3,000 square meters of land, the Utako Farmers Market comprises:

  • 50 lock-up shops
  • 40 informal stalls
  • 7 warehouses

This initiative stands as a testament to Abuja’s growing commitment to sustainability, innovation, and inclusive development.
