Abuja, Nigeria

Business owners in Abuja have strongly opposed the Abuja Municipal Area Council’s (AMAC) recent imposition of a N200,000 emission levy, labeling it unfair and burdensome.

The council issued official notices justifying the charge under environmental laws, stating that it applies to emissions from generators, industrial equipment, and waste disposal systems.

This is to notify you of the fee due to Abuja Municipal Area Council for emission levy in accordance with the law,” AMAC stated in its notice, citing sections of the constitution and environmental regulations.

However, many entrepreneurs argue that the levy is unjustifiable, especially given Nigeria’s unreliable electricity supply, which compels businesses to rely on generators for daily operations.

Last year, AMAC introduced the levy at N100,000, with officials stating it was negotiable. The recent increase has further fueled discontent among business owners.

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called for an immediate suspension of the levy, asserting that it imposes an excessive financial strain on businesses already grappling with economic challenges. Stakeholders have urged the council to reconsider the policy and engage in dialogue to find a more balanced approach to environmental management.
