First Lady Launches Primary Healthcare Centre to Combat TB in Sauka

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has taken a significant step in addressing tuberculosis (TB) by directing the establishment of a new Primary Healthcare Centre in Sauka Village, Abuja Municipal Area Council. During the World Tuberculosis Day 2025 commemoration, Tinubu, who serves as the Global and National Stop TB Champion, announced a comprehensive approach to strengthen healthcare services in the region.

Commitment to Community Health

Speaking at the event, organized by the Federal Ministry of Health and key partners including Stop TB Partnership Nigeria and the World Health Organization, Tinubu emphasized the critical importance of grassroots interventions in combating TB. The event’s theme, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” was locally adapted to “We Fit Run Am; A Collective Call for Action Against TB” to ensure community engagement.

Substantial Investment in Healthcare

Demonstrating her commitment, Tinubu pledged ₦1 billion and approved the construction of the Primary Healthcare Centre. Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, will oversee the project’s implementation, aligning with President Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ for an efficient healthcare system.

Addressing a Critical Public Health Challenge

The new facility aims to serve as a crucial hub for TB detection, treatment, and general healthcare services. Tinubu highlighted the persistent challenge TB presents in Nigeria, noting the country’s high global ranking in TB burden. Despite being preventable and treatable, the disease continues to pose significant public health risks.

With the support of FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, this initiative represents a targeted approach to improving healthcare access and combating TB at the community level.
