Abuja Council’s TV Levies Sparks Outrage and Legal Pushback
Abuja, Nigeria – March 24, 2025 – The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) faces backlash over its demand that Tela Network Ltd pay a US$325 levy for owning a TV, plus arrears and fines totaling US$1,300.
Tela Network Ltd, disputing the charge, argues it is not a broadcaster and has challenged AMAC to justify the fee. AMAC cites a 2012 by-law, requiring businesses in “Computer Service Generally” to pay a TV/Radio license fee of US$657, but this has not quelled public outrage.
Legal experts and citizens call the tax excessive and unjust. Tela Network Ltd’s lawyer, Barrister Iroh, has hinted at legal action, while human rights lawyer Liborous Oshoma decries the burden on low- and middle-income earners.
Social media users have slammed the levy as exploitative, questioning why individuals must pay for mere TV ownership. AMAC remains silent as calls for tax reform grow. All eyes are on Tela Network Ltd’s next move, which could set a legal precedent.
