The Centre for School Health Education and Environmental Hygiene (CSHEEH), in partnership with the Nigerian Dental Association (NDA), FCT Chapter, has highlighted the strong connection between oral health and mental well-being. Good oral hygiene can greatly improve a person’s quality of life.
This was emphasized during the 2025 World Oral Health Day (WOHD) event at Noble Stride Academy, Sokale Dutse, Abuja.
Dr. Folasade Momoh, Executive Director of CSHEEH, stressed the importance of this year’s theme, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind.” She explained that poor oral hygiene can lead to low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, and social discomfort, all of which affect mental health.
The visit aimed to educate pupils on the link between oral health and mental well-being while encouraging good oral care habits. Dr. Momoh reaffirmed CSHEEH’s commitment to promoting health education among young people.
Dr. Agho Theophilus, Chairman of the NDA, FCT Chapter, also spoke on the issue. Represented by Vice Chairman Dr. Ogunsanya Ayomide, he explained that oral health is crucial to overall well-being.
“Oral health is the gateway to the body. Poor hygiene affects the entire system. For example, bad breath caused by improper brushing or lack of dental care can make children shy away from speaking, leading to low self-esteem,” he said.
He also noted that oral health problems can signal other medical conditions like diabetes. Regular dental check-ups help detect early symptoms and improve overall health.
Theophilus praised CSHEEH for its efforts in raising awareness, especially among children.
Annabel Olawoye, Head Teacher of Noble Stride Academy, thanked the visiting dental professionals. She stressed the need for stronger partnerships between schools and health experts to promote oral hygiene.
The event featured free dental check-ups for pupils and staff. Attendees also received toothbrushes, toothpaste, and bookmarks with oral health tips. A total of 112 children benefited from the services.
