The Director General and CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, has commissioned the first Hybrid Electric Vehicle Charging Station, situated in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

The grand commissioning event held on Thursday was attended by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, along with other high-ranking government officials.

Abdullahi described the project as an electric vehicle charging station designed for sustainable operation and long-term durability. He stated, “It features a 5.5-kilowatt solar-powered system capable of utilizing both public grid power and solar PV. The facility is equipped with a 10-kilowatt lithium battery and an 8 kVA intelligent inverter for efficient and rapid charging.”

He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the presidential declaration on climate change and Nigeria’s clean energy policy, aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The project promotes the use of solar energy, facilitates a transition to a low-carbon economy, and reduces dependence on fossil fuels in the transportation sector.

The Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) highlighted the facility’s fast-charging capabilities, noting that a typical electric vehicle (EV) can be fully charged in approximately 30 minutes. Additionally, the station can charge up to four vehicles simultaneously, accommodating both compatible and generic models.
