The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, “Customs Cares,” at Government Secondary School (GSS) Wuse Zone 3, Abuja.

As part of the initiative, the NCS installed CCTV cameras, solar powered streetlights, and renovated the school’s auditorium, enhancing security and improving learning conditions for students.

Speaking at the launch, Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the Service’s commitment to community development beyond its core mandate of trade facilitation and border security.

“In recognition of our responsibility to the communities that host us, we have embarked on a comprehensive CSR strategy prioritizing education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Today’s launch at GSS Wuse Zone 3 symbolizes our investment in the future of our youth.”

Adeniyi explained that GSS Wuse Zone 3 was deliberately chosen due to its historical significance, as the Nigeria Customs Service once had its headquarters in the area. He assured that the initiative is a long-term commitment, with ongoing support for schools rather than a one-time intervention.

The Customs Cares initiative will be extended across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with one school in each Local Government Area receiving tailored interventions based on needs assessments conducted in collaboration with local education authorities.

The initiative is structured around six key pillars, with education as the primary focus. Other aspects include:

Healthcare interventions (such as mobile clinics and malaria prevention campaigns).

Environmental sustainability (including a recycling initiative repurposing used tires into school bags, sandals, and tiles).

Economic empowerment programs.

To sustain funding, 4% of the NCS’s annual wage bill equivalent to 50% of each officer’s one-month salary—has been allocated. Adeniyi praised Customs officers for their voluntary contributions, with many pledging additional support through personal donations and expertise.

The Principal of GSS Wuse Zone 3, Mrs. Josephine Chizoba Ugwu, expressed gratitude, describing the initiative as a thoughtful gesture that made students feel valued.

“With this improved learning environment, our students will not only excel academically but also develop strong character.”

The Customs Cares initiative marks a significant step in enhancing education and community welfare across Nigeria, reinforcing the NCS’s role beyond border security.
