Outrage as Abuja Area Council Imposes ₦500,000 Levy on Office Reception TVs Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria – Business owners in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed frustration over a new levy imposed by an Abuja Area Council, requiring them to pay ₦500,000 for having a television in their office reception areas.

Several business owners have decried the move as exploitative and unjustified, questioning the rationale behind such a hefty fee. “This is absurd! A TV in my office is for customer comfort, not a source of revenue for the government,” lamented a local businessman who wished to remain anonymous.

According to reports, the Area Council claims the fee falls under entertainment licensing, similar to levies paid by bars, hotels, and other establishments broadcasting content. However, legal experts argue that such a demand has no clear legal backing and could be challenged in court.

Business groups and associations are already mobilizing to resist the levy, calling for immediate government intervention. “If we allow this, what’s next? A tax for having chairs in our reception?” another entrepreneur quipped.

Many fear that such policies could stifle business growth, especially in an already challenging economic climate. The affected business owners are now demanding a review of the policy, urging authorities to prioritize business-friendly reforms rather than burdensome levies.

For now, the controversy continues, with many wondering whether this is an isolated incident or the beginning of a worrying trend for businesses in the FCT.
