Abuja, Nigeria – March 13, 2025
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has spent a total of N39 billion on the renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, according to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Wike stated that the project was necessary to upgrade the facility to international standards, ensuring that it remains a top destination for diplomatic, business, and government events.
“The International Conference Centre is a key infrastructure in Abuja, and its renovation was long overdue. We have modernized its facilities to meet global standards, ensuring that it continues to attract major international conferences and events,” Wike said.
The renovation reportedly includes structural improvements, state-of-the-art technology installations, and enhanced security features. However, the hefty expenditure has sparked reactions from stakeholders, with some questioning the transparency and cost-effectiveness of the project.
Critics argue that the funds could have been channeled into other pressing infrastructural and social needs within the FCT. However, the minister defended the expenditure, emphasizing that the renovation would bring economic benefits by boosting Abuja’s appeal as a global conference hub.
As the ICC reopens for events, many will be watching to see if the investment translates into increased revenue and global recognition for Nigeria’s capital city.
Reactions:
- “N39 billion is a huge amount for renovation. We need more details on the breakdown of costs,” said a policy analyst.
- “If the facility is now world-class and can generate revenue, then it might be worth it,” a business expert noted.
