Abuja, Nigeria (AP) — In response to the recent suspension of U.S. foreign aid, Nigerian lawmakers have approved an additional $200 million for the country’s health sector as part of its 2025 federal budget. The measure aims to counteract potential disruptions in public health programs, particularly those focused on disease control and epidemic prevention.

The $200 million allocation is part of Nigeria’s $36.6 billion spending plan for 2025. It was passed on Thursday during a budget session led by Senate Appropriations Chair Sen. Adeola Olamilekan, who warned of the “adverse effects” the U.S. aid cuts could have on Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The decision follows the Trump administration’s 90-day freeze on funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which previously made Nigeria one of its top ten recipients in 2023.

Much of the newly allocated funds will be directed toward vaccine distribution, epidemic control, and medical treatment to ensure that health services remain stable despite the funding gap.

“This move is necessary to sustain progress in public health and prevent a crisis,” Olamilekan stated.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with over 200 million people, has relied on USAID funding for key health initiatives, including malaria prevention, maternal care, and HIV treatment. With the aid suspension, officials stress the importance of self-reliance in safeguarding public health.

While the federal government’s intervention is seen as a crucial step, health experts say additional strategies, including private sector partnerships and alternative funding sources, may be needed to ensure long-term stability.

The budget approval signals Nigeria’s commitment to mitigating the impact of international funding cuts while strengthening its health infrastructure.
