Early Rainfall Hits Abuja as NiMet Predicts Wetter Start to 2025
Abuja, Nigeria – February 28, 2025
Residents of Abuja witnessed an unusual downpour on Thursday evening as a light shower turned into a heavy downpour across Utako, Jabi, dutse and surrounding areas. The rainfall, which lasted for about an hour, comes just days after a brief drizzle was recorded in parts of Airport Road and Life Camp on Saturday, February 22.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier predicted that most parts of Nigeria would experience significant rainfall earlier than expected in 2025.
This forecast appears to be unfolding, as showers are occurring before the usual rainy season, which traditionally begins in late March or early April and extends until October or November.
The unexpected rain showers could signal shifting weather patterns, possibly affecting transportation, agriculture and urban planning. Experts have urged residents and authorities to prepare for potential flooding and other weather related disruptions if the trend continues.
NiMet has advised the public to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.
As the rainy season approaches, the agency will continue monitoring developments to provide accurate updates on climate patterns across the country.
