FCT Town Planners Reaffirm Commitment to Abuja Master Plan Restoration
Abuja, Nigeria – February 27, 2025 – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has reiterated its dedication to working alongside the government in restoring and upholding the Abuja Master Plan. This initiative seeks to ensure that ongoing and future developments within the nation’s capital align with the city’s original urban planning framework.
During a press briefing held in Abuja, the Chairman of the FCT NITP, Engr. Hassan Oladele, emphasized the importance of adhering to established guidelines in order to maintain the city’s structural integrity and aesthetic value. He noted that unauthorized constructions and land misuse have contributed to infrastructural decay and environmental challenges, necessitating urgent intervention.

“We are committed to collaborating with the FCT Administration to ensure that Abuja remains a model city that reflects its original master plan. The deviation from this plan has led to congestion, irregular land use, and inefficiencies in service delivery,” Oladele stated.
The FCT Administration has welcomed the partnership, highlighting the need for a structured approach to urban planning. According to FCT Minister, Dr. Mariam Balogun, the government is ready to implement stricter regulations against illegal developments while also promoting sustainable city expansion.
Urban development experts argue that the Abuja Master Plan, which was initially designed to create an organized and environmentally friendly capital, has been increasingly undermined by unauthorized settlements and poor planning decisions. The renewed commitment from the town planners is expected to guide policymakers and developers in making informed planning decisions that align with the city’s long-term vision.
Residents and business stakeholders have also expressed optimism, with many calling for stringent enforcement of urban planning laws to curb disorderly growth and improve infrastructure.
As Abuja continues to expand rapidly, urban planners stress the necessity of aligning all development efforts with the master plan to enhance livability, economic growth, and sustainable urban development. The collaboration between NITP and the FCT Administration is expected to yield concrete results in the coming months, as discussions on policy implementation and enforcement strategies intensify.
