House of Reps Orders MTN to Reverse Tariff Hike, Suspends NCC’s 50% Increment Over Economic Hardship

Abuja, Nigeria – February 12, 2025

The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed telecom giant MTN to immediately reverse its recent tariff hike, following public outcry over the increased cost of mobile services. Lawmakers also ordered the suspension of the 50% increment approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), citing the economic difficulties faced by citizens.

During a plenary session, the House emphasized that the increase in telecom charges would worsen the financial burden on Nigerians, many of whom are already struggling with inflation and a high cost of living. Lawmakers expressed concern that such hikes could negatively impact businesses, students, and the overall digital economy.

The current economic reality does not support any increase in telecom tariffs. We urge MTN and other telecom operators to revert to the old pricing model while the NCC provides a detailed justification for the approval of this increment,” said a representative from the House.

The House Committee on Telecommunications has been tasked with engaging the NCC and MTN to ensure compliance and evaluate the need for consumer-friendly pricing models.

This development comes amid growing frustration from Nigerians over rising utility costs and inflation, further fueling debates on regulatory oversight and economic policies.

More updates to follow as the situation unfolds.
