President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said that the Kugbo Terminal would be a significant milestone in the transportation system in Abuja.
Akpabio stated this, Tuesday, while flagging off construction of the Terminal in Abuja.
The Senate President said: “This event is a significant milestone in our on-going efforts to enhance the infrastructure and public transportation system of the capital city of our beloved country.”
“The development of these bus terminals is more than just a construction project; it is a testament to the good works and commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s government to the progress and modernization of Nigeria”, he said.
Akpabio lauded the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the remarkable strides he had made in barely a year in office.
He commended the Minister for upgrading transportation networks, completing abandoned roads, improving public services, and developing the state-of-the-art facilities.
The Minister, while speaking earlier, declared that President Tinubu’s government was not only for elites, who could afford their wants but also for those who could not afford basic things of life.
Highlighting the importance of the bus terminals, Wike said: “Look at the kind of rainfall today, how many people will be on the road to wait for taxis or buses.
“They have to go back to their houses and probably not be able to go to work today for their daily activities. But when this bus terminal is completed, you have access to the place whether it’s raining or not,” he said.
“You can identify or know who is the person that is picking you and take you safely to wherever you are going. It will also reduce ‘one chance’, you are on the road, you don’t know who has the car and the person tells you, are you going to Nyanya and you said yes , he said enter. The next story you will hear is that the person has been kidnapped. With this, you don’t need to go and wait on the road, you just come to the bus terminal and board wherever you are going, this will reduce the level of insecurity,” Wike stressed.
The Minister continued: “What makes our city a great city is when the basic infrastructure are provided, a city like Abuja until now cannot have proper public transportation and with what Mr. President has directed us to do, I believe in the next twelve, thirteen months there will be a change in transportation in FCT.”
He assured that there was adequate funds; saying, “this is not a project where you will say that there is no adequate funding, and it has been our practice for projects that don’t have adequate budgeting, we will not go and embark on such projects”, he explained.
