A delegation from the Faculty of Paediatrics, West African College of Physicians (WACP), has applauded the neonatal units at Wuse District Hospital and Karshi General Hospital for their high-quality facilities and service delivery.
The team, led by Professor Olufemi Ogunrinde, was in Abuja to evaluate four secondary healthcare institutions for potential accreditation to offer postgraduate paediatric training. The hospitals reviewed included Wuse, Karshi, Asokoro, and Maitama.
While addressing the team, the Director-General of the Hospital Management Board (HMB), Dr. Olugbenga Bello, expressed gratitude for their remarks and assured them that the Board would make efforts to implement the recommendations provided, within available resources.
Dr. Bello affirmed the Board’s dedication to enhancing the quality of paediatric training and upgrading healthcare delivery across all facilities under its jurisdiction.
During their visit, the accreditation team carried out a detailed appraisal of each hospital’s paediatric departments, focusing on neonatal care units, staff availability, training amenities, and general hospital infrastructure.
The team noted that Wuse District Hospital stood out for its modern and well-equipped neonatal section. Similarly, Karshi General Hospital was praised for its impressive infrastructure and services, which exceeded expectations, particularly considering its rural classification.
Professor Ogunrinde emphasized the critical role of neonatal care, stating that such services must always be prioritized in healthcare planning. He also stressed the necessity for structured paediatric training at the secondary healthcare level.
At the end of the assessment, the accreditation team disclosed that a comprehensive report would be submitted to the WACP for further review, after which a decision on the hospitals’ accreditation status would be finalized.
