PSC Sparks Uproar Over Abuja Exam Order for Senior Police

The Police Service Commission (PSC) is under fire after ordering all senior police officers due for promotion to travel to Abuja for examinations a move that many within the Force describe as harsh, unnecessary, and potentially dangerous.

Although the PSC says the decision was made due to budget constraints, insiders say it’s more about uncovering deep-rooted issues in the system, including ghost workers, officers who have relocated abroad but still earn salaries, and widespread bribery in the promotion process.

Speaking anonymously, a senior officer told SaharaReporters that over 600 officers were retired in the last six months, but many others who have died or quietly moved overseas are still receiving monthly pay. Some officers are allegedly far older than their official ages, and others remain at home due to health reasons but continue to draw salaries.

“The PSC claims it’s about saving costs, but we know it’s more than that,” one officer said. “The promotion process has become a money-making opportunity for some. Officers pay bribes to get promoted, while those who are qualified are often ignored.”

Officers are also concerned about the logistics. They’re being asked to leave their posts, fund their own travel and accommodation, and face the risks of road accidents and kidnappings all without any support from the PSC.

“This has never happened before,” one officer lamented. “Only Commissioners and above used to travel for such exams. Now, everyone from ASP upwards has to make the trip to Abuja. It’s insensitive.”

Some even fear the mass gathering could lead to something bigger like a potential police strike.

Many are calling for the exams to be held at zonal commands across the country instead, where senior PSC officials can still oversee the process without putting officers through unnecessary hardship.
