Wike to Meet Stakeholders Over FCT Teachers’ Strike
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike will meet on Thursday with chairmen of the six area councils, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and NANS to resolve the ongoing primary school teachers’ strike.
NANS confirmed the meeting in a statement after suspending a planned protest, following talks at the DSS headquarters and a session with the House Committee on FCT.
Wike explained that teacher salaries fall under the responsibility of the area councils due to FCT’s full local government autonomy. He proposed a bailout—60% from the FCTA and 40% from the councils. After the councils failed to pay, Wike withheld their May and June IGR to cover the arrears.
NANS said funds will be disbursed soon and pledged to monitor the situation to ensure schools reopen.
